A member of the biological family of cats, tigers are apex predators that occupy the to spot in the jungle ecosystem. The largest of the cats, tigers are believed to have originated in East Asia and migrated to different locations. Living in diverse habitats, they have evolved abd undergone distinct changes in size, coat, and colouring. This led to tigers being classified into eight subspecies.

Tigers are a rare and endangered. Of the eight subspecies listed, three are already extinct. Number of remaining five are rapidly dwindling. India, home to the largest tigers population in the world too is seeing a sharp decline in their number. From 3642 tigers counted in 2002 , there are now only 1411 tigers left.
